FA19: American Policing: 15531Upon successfully completing this course, students will be familiar with the basic issues involved in policing in the United States, will develop an understanding of the key problems and concerns faced by today’s police, and will explore the methods used by the police to address these problems. Students will be able to: 1. Relate law enforcement history from English origins to the United States 2. Recognize how recruitment, training and socialization prepare officers for the streets. 3. Relate methods and menaces of the patrol function 4.Define Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving 5. Recognize what is forensic science and criminalistics. 6. Describe personnel issues and practices as it relates to stress, labor relations, higher education and private police. 7. Define accountability as it relates to ethics, use of force, corruption and discipline for law enforcement officers. 8. Describe the various types of Federal. State and Local agencies as well as their various functions. 9. Recognize Municipal and County agencies and their organization, administration and roles.
