Understanding Accessibility for an Online Environment

Web accessibility is the practice of designing and developing websites, tools, and technologies so that people with disabilities can use them. More specifically, people can: perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web.

While Web Accessibility is typically referred to in web-design, it is also important to consider Accessibility when it comes to developing Open Textbooks and Online Courses.

When searching for open educational resources, please keep accessibility in mind.

  • Look for an accessibility statement referring to WCAG 2.0 AA.
  • Search for accessibility in the item description and in the advanced search features.
  • Look for a VPAT (Voluntary Product Accessibility Template)
  • Use Blackboard Ally through D2L to assess usability
