Citing Sources

The Library Databases provide students with access to a number of different functions, including out-of-the-box Citations for each search result. To use these Citations follow these steps:

  1. Click on the article you would like to use from your search results
  2. Click on the "Cite" tool, which can be found on the right side of the article information page.
    • A list of Citation Formats will appear
  3. Find the Citation Format you wish to use (typically APA or MLA - see below for an example image)
  4. Copy and paste the citation into your References Page
  5. Double check the following:
    • Format - is the citation properly indented?
    • Italics - did the italics disappear when you copied and pasted?
    • Capitalization - while useful, the database citation tool does have its flaws, most prominent of which is its capitalization errors
    • Citation Formatting - does the citation line up with the guidelines for of the citation format you selected (APA/MLA)?
  6. ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK THE CITATIONS

Why We Cite

Citations have value beyond grading requirements and simply being constructed properly.

  • Citations establish credibility within your own papers, supporting your own arguments with the work of established, credible sources
  • Citations acknowledge the work of authors and give them credit for their work
  • Citations prevent the commission of plagiarism, or claiming credit for someone else's work
